Hundreds of participants from all over the U.S., as well as from Dominica and the U.K. attended the 17th Annual Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) Leadership Conference held September 26-29. There were separate agendas for clinical faculty members and for hospital coordinators and opportunities for networking and learning during the breakout sessions, lectures, and presentations. Teaching awards were presented, and prizes were given for the best posters.
“Seeing the faculty and administration working together toward a shared goal of improving the student experience was reassuring,” said RUSM student Mandar Jadhav, past president of the Student Government Association, who was invited to attend.
In her opening remarks, conference organizer Dr. Alison Dobbie, RUSM’s senior associate dean of medical education, welcomed everyone, including the student representatives, and noted, “Without our students, not one of us would be here today.”
The focus on students was echoed by Dr. Joseph Flaherty, RUSM’s dean and chancellor, who said, “We’re coming from very disparate backgrounds. We need to get together to recharge, and to rethink what we’re here for – to produce outstanding physicians.”
The 2013 RUSM Teaching Award recipients were: Double Helix Award for Basic Science Teaching, Laura Welke, PhD; Golden Stethoscope Awards for Clinical Teaching – semesters 1-5: Nancy Selfridge, MD and Lori Costello, MD (tied) and semester 6-10: Romeen Lavani, MD.
As chair of the RUSM Leadership Conference Abstract Review Committee, Alan Bateson, PhD, led the committee in selecting the short orals, posters, and lecture that were presented at the event. Attendees voted for the best posters and the winners were: first place --“A Measurable Approach to the Assessment of Professionalism” by Hammel, Gnecco, Keane, Hazen and McIntyre; second place – “Models or Mannequins: What is the Best Way to Teach Pelvic Exams to Medical Students?” by Hazen and Keane; and third place – “Medical Student Involvement in Achieving a Tobacco-Free Campus” by Yagudayev, Abdulhusein, and Gee.
At least one person present had attended all 17 of RUSM’s Leadership Conferences, Dr. Abe Kermani, RUSM clinical chair of psychology. He commented that, “Every year the conference gets better.”
